7 Women Who Have Impacted the World of Technology

Today is International Women's Day, and this month is Women's History Month.

Throughout our history, women have made incredibly significant contributions to the field of technology, and subsequent fields as well. But have their accomplishments often gone unrecognized or overlooked? Perhaps so.

From pioneering computer programmers to groundbreaking CEOs, women have played a vital role in shaping the tech industry of today. Below are just a few shining examples of women who have majorly impacted the world of technology:

  1. Ada Lovelace. Ada Lovelace is widely considered to be the world's first computer programmer. In the mid-1800s, she collaborated with Charles Babbage on a mechanical computer that was never completed. Lovelace wrote the first algorithm intended to be processed by the machine, and she also envisioned the potential of computers to go beyond mere calculation and perform tasks like music composition.
  2. Grace Hopper. Grace Hopper was a computer scientist and naval officer credited with developing the first compiler, a program that translates human-readable code into machine language. This innovation made programming more accessible and helped pave the way for modern software development. Hopper was also instrumental in the development of COBOL, a programming language that is still used in business and finance today.
  3. Susan Kare. Susan Kare is a graphic designer who helped create some of the most iconic user interface elements in computing history. She designed the original Macintosh icons, including the trash can and the smiling face that greeted users upon startup. Kare also created the fonts used on the Macintosh, as well as the icons and graphics for early versions of Windows.
  4. Meg Whitman. Meg Whitman is a business executive who served as the CEO of several major tech companies, including eBay and Hewlett-Packard. Known for her leadership skills and her ability to turn struggling companies around, Whitman also ran for governor of California in 2010 and was the Republican nominee.
  5. Sheryl Sandberg. Sheryl Sandberg is a business executive who has held several high-profile roles in the tech industry, and is currently the COO of Facebook. Previously, she was a vice president at Google. Sandberg is also a vocal advocate for women in technology and the author of bestselling book "Lean In."
  6. Radia Perlman. Radia Perlman is a computer programmer and network engineer known for her work on the Spanning Tree Protocol, a networking protocol that prevents loops in network topologies. She has also made contributions to other networking technologies, including the Internet Protocol and the Simple Network Management Protocol.
  7. Ginni Rometty. Ginni Rometty is a business executive who served as the CEO of IBM from 2012 to 2020. Known for her strategic leadership and her emphasis on emerging technologies, like artificial intelligence and cloud computing, Rometty was also the first woman to head IBM.

These women are just a few examples of the many who have made massive contributions to the digital and technology industries over time. By celebrating their achievements and raising awareness of their accomplishments, we can only hope to inspire the next generation of women to pursue careers in technology, continue to break down barriers, and shatter stereotypes in the field.

At i3 Broadband, many women play an important role in the success of our organization. We would like to extend a sincere 'Thank You' to all of you for your hard work, diligence, and continued achievements.
